HENDERSON – Henderson Police Department’s Traffic officers will target intersections again beginning today, looking for accident-causing traffic violations.

Last month’s three-week effort yielded nearly 400 citations for drivers running red lights and another 230 tickets for drivers talking on cell phones. So starting today, Henderson Police will be joined by other area officers for an enforcement effort over the next three weeks with enhanced enforcement on various days. Plain-clothes officers will be at busy intersections radioing waiting uniformed police officers to pull over drivers who are committing traffic violations.

Officers will be looking for drivers running red lights, following too closely, driving aggressively, making unsafe lane changes, failing to yield to pedestrians and distracted driving. Officers will be at intersections deemed dangerous through a review of state and local statistics.

In 2012, motor vehicle crashes killed 258 people on Nevada roadways. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 42 of those deaths, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety. In Nevada, 58 pedestrians died in traffic crashes in 2012. Of the fatal pedestrian traffic crashes in the state last year, 42 occurred in Clark County with five of those occurring in Henderson.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant.
