A drunken 50-year-old mother bit a police officer's so hard that she left her false teeth embedded in his fingers, a court heard.

Jeanette Hopper was facing arrest after reports she had been wielding a knife, and a police officer on the scene saw blood around her house and on her hands, Gloucester Crown Court was told.

Prosecutor Richard Posner said, "It was clear to the sergeant that the family in the house was in fear, so he decided to arrest her. She sunk her teeth into the ring finger of the officer’s right hand. He slapped the back of her head to seek release from the bite. As she moved her head away, the false teeth she was wearing stayed embedded in his finger."

The court was told Hopper only had a "hazy recollection" of the incident when she was interviewed, and claimed that it was a knee-jerk reaction to being handcuffed.

She pleaded guilty to common assault on the sergeant but denied affray – and has been sentenced to 12 months of supervision.
