Saving money on energy bills is important to us all. However, most of us don't notice ways in which we can save energy and money while operating appliances in the home. All appliances, not just the largest ones such as heaters or air conditioners, can waste energy. Here are some simple ways to save both money and energy: * Check the seals on the refrigerator door at least once a year. If you can easily pull a dollar bill out when the door is closed, you should replace the seals. * Dust and dirt can accumulate around the compressor and motor of the refrigerator, which causes it to work harder to keep food cold. Clean these areas with a long-handled brush once a year. Make sure to unplug your refrigerator before you begin. * In the refrigerator, make sure there is room for the cold air to move around your food. Freezers, on the other hand, work better when they are nearly full. * If you have a manual defrost model, don't let ice build up in the freezer area. Frost also makes your refrigerator work harder. * Insulating your water tank and the hot water pipes with fiberglass wraps will help hold in heat and reduce water heating costs. * Look for energy efficient dishwashers and other appliances when replacing old ones. For more information about appliance savings tips, contact your local service provider or your utility company.
