If a baby was circumcised (SIR-come-sized), there may be some soreness and perhaps a little bleeding. Using double diapers the first day will help cushion the penis and keep the baby's thighs from pressing against it. He may have a small dressing wrapped around the area from which the foreskin was removed. It may come off when the baby urinates. You may need to put on a fresh gauze pad with each diaper change, although some pediatricians advise leaving it off altogether. You can help prevent any moist or raw skin areas from rubbing against the diaper by applying a bit of petroleum jelly. It's important to keep the area as clean as possible. Wipe gently with soap and water during diaper changes. Avoid getting the penis totally wet until the child is completely healed. The tip of the penis may look red for the first few days, and there may be a yellow secretion, which is normal. It doesn't happen very often, but if the redness or secretions persist, there may be an infection, and you should consult a pediatrician. After the circumcision has healed, the penis usually requires no additional care.
