The types of learning activities scheduled will depend on your child's age group, and the particular daycare center they're attending. Very young children can't understand group lessons like counting or ABC's. Instead, they learn by interacting with adults. For infants and toddlers, caregivers should encourage language skills by naming objects, and helping children express themselves. The children can experiment with colors and shapes, using large crayons, finger paints, sand and water. When appropriate, attempts at eating or dressing should be encouraged. Safe, washable toys should be provided, especially those that respond to movement, like rattles and balls. Children of preschool age will require more challenging experiences. They may learn to identify the letters in their name, listen to stories, or even create their own stories, with the teacher writing down their words. They may also be given three of an item, to associate with the number three. These activities help prepare youngsters for reading and math later in life. Preschoolers learn colors and shapes by working with arts and crafts. They discover how things fit together, by playing with building blocks and Tinkertoys. And through songs and musical instruments, they develop rhythm and balance.
