Teens can often be good babysitters when they've received proper training. Most people with younger brothers or sisters may know how to effectively entertain and assert authority with children. One thing to look for in a babysitter is a calm and patient demeanor, and the ability to administer first aid. Wonderful babysitter programs are available through organizations such as 4-H®, Girl and Boy Scouts®, and local community centers. These programs can train a potential caregiver in first aid. Participants will probably learn how to care for cuts, bruises and other minor wounds. Most first aid programs teach the students the signs that indicate medical treatment is necessary. Some programs include C-P-R certification, which is beneficial for all caregivers. Sitter training programs often teach methods for correcting a child's behavior with positive reinforcement and calm verbal responses. Thorough training programs can include ideas for safely entertaining children, such as pointers on keeping children safe while they use blunt scissors, what to do if glue is ingested, and other situations that can occur while caring for children. If your choosing a sitter who's been through a training program, it's a good idea to contact the sponsoring agency and review the curriculum
