LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says the bus driver is not at fault in the March death of Kaylee Derks.
Metro's accident report examined what happened on March 16 when Kaylee, a fifth-grader at Dean La Mar Allen Elementary School, got off her school bus, only to be run over by the bus at Ann Road and Pebble Rock, close to her home.
The report says Kaylee just didn't see the school bus coming when she crossed in to the path of danger.
Kaylee's death prompted an entire month of coverage at News 3 -- where we put cameras all over the problem.
We indeed saw children and even parents crossing outside of crosswalks and right in to the path of many dangerous situations.
That said -- we also found many bus drivers not obeying traffic rules -- some even running stop signs at school crosswalks.
Clark County School District officials say they still haven't seen the report and are still doing an internal review of their own.
For the Derks family, it is a difficult day. This report puts the blame on their daughter's decisions in the road that day, and they have many unanswered questions.
