LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- More than a dozen Las Vegas firefighter recruits tried to convince Las Vegas city officials that they didn't cheat on a class exam.

However, the city manager told attorneys she isn't buying their story.

It wasn't cheating. It was a "group test"-- that's the latest explanation, a group of Las Vegas firefighter recruits provided city officials explaining their conduct during mandated written tests.

That information found in the responding letter sent by the Las Vegas city manager Elizabeth Fretwell, to the recruits' attorney.

This is the latest development following months of controversy surrounding suspicious test results.

The city manager’s letter says questions about testing irregularities were not openly and accurately answered during an extensive investigation.

The letter read in part, "had the group openly testified during those interviews that the test was viewed as a group test, maybe a different result could have been achieved. These differences cannot now be overcome."

Neither can the $700,000 that was taken from public funds to get those recruits certified.

Now another round of recruits will have to go through the training process.

An internal investigation conducted by the city of Las Vegas is still underway.

And those accused firefighter trainees have filed a case to seek reinstatement and get another shot at getting certified.
