NORTH LAS VEGAS – Craig Ranch Regional Park will hold its grand opening celebration from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. The celebration will include a concert, beginning at 3 p.m.

Media members this morning received a sneak peek at the new park, located at 628 W. Craig Road.

Craig Ranch Regional Park offers fun and recreation, from a five-acre dog park to 62 community garden plots, a four-bowl skate park, athletic fields and bucolic scenery to multiple playgrounds and gazebos for weddings, corporate retreats and birthday parties.

The $130 million transformation of the regional park from a golf course is the latest chapter in the historic site’s storied past. It was settled by pioneers in 1905. It was farmed by the McFarland family, who struggled to keep the ranch viable despite challenging terrain. They abandoned the ranch in 1925.

Several years later, George Craig and his family took over. They battled the desert and flash floods to keep it going until the 1960s, when they sold it to John Stimson, a Utah businessman who turned Craig Ranch into a golf course, which he operated until 2005.

The City of North Las Vegas bought the land with funds granted from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. In 2009, the City proceeded with a groundbreaking ceremony for its citizen-driven plan to convert the golf course into a landmark destination and public park.
