LAS VEGAS(KSNV My News3) -- The lights went dark on the Las Vegas Strip Saturday night for one hour.

It wasn't completely dark, but dramatically noticeable with many hotels and casinos choosing to participate in the “Earth Hour” environmental event to send out a message about conservation.

People we met on the Strip say it sends out a good message about being green.

“A lot of people are trying to conserve energy nowadays; you know the economy and that. I think that’s a very good idea,” said Michelle George.

“I think one hour for one day out of the year doesn't make a difference. I think we need to work on it on a daily basis,” said Lorena Hernandez.

Hernandez says she was actually caught off guard by the darkened strip. She had her children with her and was not comfortable.

“In the spirit of it, it’s really good, and I’m good and I’m really glad they’re observing this, but I’m just a little concerned with small children running around," Hernandez said.

Hernandez and others say they do their part to not only conserve energy but take care of the environment.

“Like saving water, just turning off electricity you leave the house, things like that. Granted I’m only one person, so I’m not going to help everything but it goes a long way,” said Gerard Fenn.

And Michelle George says she’s not only taking care of the earth, but like many others we spoke to, she says it helps save money.

“We use energy efficient light bulbs and now when we leave at night, we turn our lights out when we leave,” George said.

While they may be doing their part, whether it’s turning off the lights they’re not using or driving hybrid cars, they feel if enough people get involved it would be like a pebble tossed into a still pond: it would cause a ripple effect.
