LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Embattled state Assemblyman Steven Brooks was expected to leave a mental facility Wednesday, but he has remained in the facility near Horizon Ridge and St. Rose Parkway as of Thursday morning.
Brooks was legally committed Friday after a family disturbance. Police say he threatened a family member with a sword. Ten days ago, he was arrested on felony charges for allegedly threatening Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
When Brooks returned to Las Vegas Jan. 23 from Carson City, he opted for legislative police protection. It is expected that legislative police would be present when brooks is released.
Brooks is being held under a Legal 2000 which is a Nevada law that if police or doctors believe a person can harm others or himself, he can be held at a mental facility for 72 hours.
Mitch Posin, brooks’ attorney, said Wednesday afternoon that Brooks was “getting out today.”
Brooks plans to be in Carson City on Monday for the start of the session.
