LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- There are more than 12 million people nationwide suffering from food allergies, and for many, some of those foods can kill them.

Local families dealing with that reality are taking a stand one step at a time.

Spencer Peterson, 6, suffers from life-threatening food allergies. It was something his parents figured out soon after he was born.

“When we gave him his first sip of milk, he immediately began gagging, vomited, three layers of blisters,” said his mother, Alexandra Peterson. “He was completely deformed.”

She said his condition was so severe, even touching him would leave blisters on his skin.

Spencer has gone into anaphylactic shock -- a potentially fatal reaction that closes the airway and shuts down the body -- three times.

Alexandra says living with food allergies has been life-altering. But Spencer doesn’t let his condition bring him down. In fact, he has become a local poster child for food allergies.

He serves as the honorary youth chair for Nevada. On Nov. 2, he will help kick off the fifth annual FARE Walk -- a fundraiser happening in communities nationwide to raise money and awareness.

Duane and Dana Gordin are directors for the local Food Allergy Research & Education chapter. They are parents of two boys with food allergies. The Gordins say bringing awareness to the issue is important.
