LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Students and parents are confused, even angered over a picture of a Las Vegas Academy of the Arts student dressed in a Ku Klux Klan costume on campus.

The Clark County magnet school is known for promoting social and cultural tolerance.

Some students say they were offended and shocked, but others say it's all been blown out of proportion.

It happened Jan. 9 when a teacher allowed students to dress up as the Ku Klux Klan for a social studies presentation. The teacher could now face disciplinary action.

The Clark County School District says this student just left social studies, where he and another student wore the white robes and gave a presentation on the historically racist and violent group.

In a recorded phone call to parents, Principal Scott Walker apologized and said in part: "In order to ensure that incidents of this nature are not repeated, we wish to assure our school community that we are reviewing our internal procedures and will convene with staff to ensure that all lessons meet the high standards you've come to expect from our school."

School District officials say they don't think the students involved will face disciplinary action but says the teacher could because the teacher is an employee. The School District says this is a personnel issue, so they won't tell us the teacher's name or let us know if the teacher is disciplined.
