NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- The North Las Vegas Fire Department fought wind and smoke to extinguish a fire at the Republic Services campus near Commerce and Gowan Monday.
The City of North Las Vegas Fire Department responded to 333 West Gowan Street for the fire reported at 5:45 p.m.
The first units at arrived at 5:49 p.m. Firefighters immediately called for a second alarm after seeing 50-foot flames and enormous amounts of dark black smoke in the yard of the Republic Services Recycling Plant.
According to the North Las Vegas Fire Dept., witnesses said they could see the smoke from as far away as Henderson, Nev.
A third alarm was dispatched at 6:15 p.m. Firefighters spoke with employees who identified large bundles of cardboard and plastic bundles as some of the items that were in flames.
The business was evacuated before the arrival of the fire department.
The North Las Vegas, Clark County, and City of Las Vegas fire departments combined forces to fight the blaze, which was extremely hot and driven by more than 30 mph winds.
The fire appears to have started in the yard of the facility and was able to extend to the building on the property. Firefighters were able to knockdown the blaze within an hour and 45 minutes of their arrival.
There were no injuries to faculty, bystanders, or firefighters to report. The fire caused extensive damage to large recyclable bundles as well as mechanical equipment and a street light.
This incident required 28 units and more than 100 firefighters to contain the blaze and prevent any more extensive damage to the property.
The fire has been determined to be an accidental mechanical fire. The damage estimates are undetermined at this time.
