LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – The Nevada Highway Patrol says people may be trying to take advantage of Metro’s new accident response policy to gather personal information from victims in a fender-bender.

According to an NHP news release, troopers responded to an accident and found someone speaking with the drivers involved. He had the other driver's required documents in his possession, and, when asked by the trooper who he was, he said that he was there to investigate the accident “since police no longer responded to accidents.”

He further stated that he was contacted by the police to respond. A second person who arrived on scene said the same thing. The subjects had business cards and forms that appeared to be official to an average citizen, but further investigation showed that information on the business card was false, along with the phone number, which was to a pre-paid cell phone and had no contract with any carrier.

The people also were driving vehicles that had no type of official markings.

Troopers are concerned that some individuals are taking advantage of drivers at a time where their thinking may not be as clear and are vulnerable. Scammers can obtain personal information from drivers’ licenses as well as residential addresses and phone numbers. These accidents may also be staged, which allows for fraudulent insurance claims.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is reminding drivers that troopers respond to vehicle collisions  that occur on or near the freeways no matter the severity.

Once a driver who is involved in a vehicle collision contacts 911 for life-threatening emergency, 311 or *NHP (*647 on cell phone) for non-life threatening emergencies, a trooper will respond. That trooper will be in uniform and be driving a marked patrol vehicle. A driver can also contact NHP to verify that an officer or trooper is present.
