LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- An 18-year-old Utah man has been charged with driving under the influence in an early Saturday morning crash north of Las Vegas that killed five members of a California family and injured four others.

Jean Soriano is being held at the Clark County Detention center without bail. He faces nine charges, including five for driving under the influence above the legal limit. His first court hearing is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said the accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-15 when a 1999 Dodge Durango with Utah plates hit the rear end of a 2002 Chevrolet Astrovan with California plates. The van lost control and spun clockwise off the right side of the roadway, ejecting five passengers. Both vehicles rolled over.

"One male teenager who was ejected survived while the other four were dead at the scene," Hixson said. "There were seven people in the van. The female driver was belted in and survived while the right seat passenger was also killed."

The victims in the van included a 49-year-old man, 45-year-old male, 41-year-old male, a female adult of unknown age and a teenage female. All were from California.

The two survivors in the van were flown to UMC Trauma while the driver and passenger in the Durango suffered minor injuries and were taken by ground ambulance to UMC.

The driver of the Durango was treated and released at UMC and was then taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, charged with driving under the influence. His 23-year-old passenger was treated and released.

The accident was at the Elgin exit, Hixson said. One lane of southbound traffic was blocked until shortly after 10 a.m.
