LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The push to get undocumented immigrants legal driving IDs is gaining momentum. Today, conservative voices lent their support to the effort.
They've formed a group called the New America Organization based in Nevada.
Among their major efforts is to get state lawmakers to back a push to allow undocumented immigrants a driver's privilege card.
The group held a news conference explaining what it would do and why it's needed in Nevada.
The distinction here is they say the card cannot be used for any purpose other than driving or getting insurance. It is not a government ID.
It's very similar to what's currently being done in Utah.
Supporters say when people fear their immigration status will become an issue -- for example, at the scene of an accident -- it's the insured drivers who end up paying the price.
This would be state measure, so those immigrants would not have to worry about having their status being reported to the federal government.
New America Organization says Democrats have already drafted a bill and they would work with them in a bipartisan effort to assure passage.
