LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- One motorist is dead after a two-vehicle accident shortly before 9 a.m. today in the southwest part of the valley.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevn Honea said one person was killed when a van and a Jeep collided at Blue Diamond (State Route 160) and El Capitan at 8:50 p.m.

"Evidence at the scene and witness reports indicate that a white, multi-passenger Econoline van was headed northbound on 160 and tried to make a left turn to El Capitan in front of a Jeep utility vehicle that was southbound on 160 when the front of the Jeep hit the right side of the van," Honea said. "The driver of the Jeep was killed at the scene and two other occupants were taken in critical condition to UMC. The driver of the van stayed at the scene and was cooperating with us."

Honea said the preliminary indication was that the woman driving the van was at fault. He also said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.

The intersection was closed for until about noon while the accident was investigated.
