LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- As the weather warms up, law enforcement is warning drivers to be more aware of the motorcycles and scooters out on Las Vegas streets.
Metro police say so far this year, five out of the 27 fatalities on the roadways in its jurisdiction involved a motorcycle or a moped. That includes the fatal crash Tuesday morning in northwest Las Vegas.
The Nevada Highway Patrol reports three accidents, one of which was fatal, involved motorcycles on the southern Nevada highways in 2013.
While some drivers say riders need to be more careful, motorcyclists say drivers need to watch out for them.
NHP says when it comes down to it; everyone needs to be more careful.
“Of course one thing is always important if you are a motorcyclist always drive defensively,” said NHP Trooper Loy Hixson. “You're a much smaller vehicle when other vehicles are out there. You are invisible to other vehicles because of the size.
“Any time you're on the motorcycle, drive defensively, be aware of surroundings and always obey the laws.”
Law enforcement says along with motorcycles and scooters, people need to watch out for bicyclists and pedestrians as they are all sharing the roads.
