LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A purse snatch at Town Square Shopping Center turned into a brief car chase, accident and fatal shooting of a suspect by Metro police near Sahara and Interstate 15 on Friday evening.

Metro said the string of events began about 8:15 p.m. Friday when a man robbed two women of their purses on the south side of Town Square.

The two women and a security guard were awaiting police when they said they heard a gunshot, according to Metro Capt. Matt McCarthy.

Police tracked the vehicle using a stolen cell phone. The car was found at Dean Martin and Tropicana and Metro pursued it a short distance but stopped the pursuit because of erratic driving by the suspect.

The car was later spotted on I-15 near Sahara. It exited the freeway eastbound and collided with another vehicle.

"Our officers gave the subject commands and he fired at them," McCarthy said in a Metro video release about the string of events. "They returned fire and the suspect was declared dead at the scene."

Two people in the vehicle that was hit by the suspect were treated at UMC and released.

Sahara was closed all night for the investigation. The roadway was opening early this morning.

The identity of the suspect will be released by the Clark County coroner's office once all relatives have been notified.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released by Metro after 72 hours per department policy.
