HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Detectives are continuing their search today for 16-year-old Adrian Navarro, the son of a 40-year-old women found slain in her apartment along with a 9-year-old brother.

"Detectives continue to follow up leads and search for information in the slaying of a mother and her 10-year-old son," Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul wrote in an email to News 3 shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday. "However, there is no new information to release at this time. The woman’s 16-year-old son has not been located as of 4 p.m. Sunday."

Elvira Canales, 40, and her son, 9-year-old Cesar Navarro, were the victims. The Clark County coroner's office ruled today that the deaths were homicides and said the cause of death was penetrating stab wounds.

Relatives had previously confirmed the two were stabbed to death inside their residence at The Summit at Sunridge Apartments on South Eastern Avenue.

"They killed them and they ripped a piece of me," the victim's niece, Anna Karen Martinez, said today. "She was more like my best friend than my aunt. Now I have no one to run and talk to about my problems at home or anything  and now she has got taken away from me."

Martinez said she spoke with her aunt daily. She said she called police Thursday when she had not heard from her aunt in several days.

Paul said on Friday that the 16-year-old is not considered a suspect. The boys' father lives in California and has declined comment.

Police could not say how long the bodies had been inside the residence.

Canales was a chef at The Venetian, according to her family.

The slayings are the fifth and sixth homicides in Henderson this year.
