WASHINGTON -- The Democratic National Committee says it will consider six cities to hold the party's presidential nominating convention in 2016.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Florida congresswoman who leads the DNC, says it received proposals from Birmingham, Alabama; Columbus, Ohio; Cleveland; New York; Philadelphia and Phoenix.

A group of DNC officials will evaluate the cities and make site visits as the committee considers its options.

A decision on the convention is not expected until late this year or early 2015. The convention is expected to cost about $60 million.

There had been some discussion in recent months that Las Vegas might make a bid for the convention but no official effort was formed.
