LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- The UNLV Running Rebels will play California on Thursday at San Jose, Calif., in the opening round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, who don't play well on the road, the game will essentially be a home game for Cal because its campus is not far from San Jose.

That might cause many Rebel fans to wonder because UNLV is No. 5 seed while Cal is a No. 12 seed.

The time of the game will be announced later today.

UNLV takes a 25-9 record into the game while Cal is 20-11. The Rebels defeated Cal on a last-second shot earlier this season.

UNLV lost Saturday in the Mountain West tournament championship game to New Mexico but won seven of its final nine games to gain some momentum.

The Rebels have advanced four times to the Final Four and won the national championship in 1990.

In 2007, UNLV made the Sweet 16 with wins against Georgia Tech and Wisconsin.

In 2008, the Rebels reached the round of 32 after beating Kent State in the tournament opener.

They missed the tournament in 2009 and have lost in the first game the past three seasons — narrowly to Northern Iowa in 2010 and by lopsided fashion against Illinois (2011) and Colorado (2012).
