PAHRUMP -- An 80-year-old Las Vegas man has been arrested in Pahrump for three counts of fraud related to selling advertisements for an out-of-state magazine. Authorities believe he may have tried the scame at several businesses in Nye and Clark counties.
Thurman Andrews, age 80, of Las Vegas, NV was arrested Friday in Pahrump and booked into the Nye County Detention Center on three counts each of burglary, obtaining money under false pretenses and petit larceny.
A local business owner alerted the Nye County Sheriff’s Office after Thurman entered his business and identified himself as a salesman for an out-of-state magazine, trying to sell an advertisement. Suspicious of the man’s actions, the business owner called the magazine’s publisher and was advised Thurman was no longer employed with the company.
Deputies from the Nye County Sheriff’s Office responded and questioned Thurman regarding the business owner’s concerns. During the investigation, it was revealed Thurman did in fact once work for the publisher but was no longer employed. It was further discovered that Thurman approached at least two other local businesses in Pahrump, each time purporting to be a current salesman for the magazine publisher and fraudulently accepting orders for advertisements and payments from the businesses.
Thurman admitted that his actions were a fraud and had no intention to turn the advertisement orders and payments over to the featured magazine publisher and in fact had already used portions of the money he had accepted for his own gain.
Nye County detectives believe Thurman has recently approached several additional businesses in Nye County, as well as in Clark County, with the same or similar scam. The investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information pertaining to this case is urged to contact the Nye County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 751-7000., reference case No. 13NY-2905.
