MOUNT CHARLESTON (KSNV MyNews3.com) – Crews battling the Carpenter 1 wildfire said Thursday that they have 43 percent containment of the 10-day-old blaze.

The area damaged nears 28,000 acres, which is now being fought by 1,386 personnel. The cost to fight the fire is nearly $9.5 million.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, heavy rain fell in the western section of the fire near the Spring Mountains, moderating fire activity. Other areas of the fire received light rain. The increased moisture and cloud cover allowed firefighters to build line directly on the fire edge. Crews should be able to secure most of the southern perimeter over the next few days.

The Kyle Canyon section of the fire is mostly secure, but scattered heat was detected in this area, with more intense heat east of Rainbow subdivision, where fire continues to back down the mountain toward Kyle Canyon Road.

Hotshot crews continued to build line and mop up along the fire edge. Falling trees and rolling debris remain a concern.
