LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- A Las Vegas man who contracted a flesh-eating bacterium is inspiring others to appreciate what they have in life.

The life of 38-year-old Eddie Garcia changed forever when doctors had to amputate his hands and feet.

It was a result of what began with a rare, flesh-eating bacterium that's associated with strep throat and enters the body through an open wound.

Garcia survived a risky procedure to remove part of his infected quad, but, during recovery, medication to keep blood flowing to his core drew blood away from his hands and feet leading to amputation.

Garcia says he's happy to be alive. His strong will and positive outlook is motivating others, including his two children.

Garcia said he hopes to be out of the rehab center and back home in a few weeks with his new prosthetics.
