LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) – Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie announced this afternoon that he will not seek a third term.

In his letter, Gillespie said he will finish his term, which is scheduled to end in January 2015.

“Without the obligation that comes from campaigning and fundraising I can focus on completing some of my major objectives like the More Cops initiative and putting more officers out on the streets.” Gillespie said in the letter. “There is nothing more important to me and nothing I am more committed to seeing through.”

According to his biography on Metro’s website, Gillespie has been with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 1980. In January 1998 he was promoted to captain and assigned to the Southeast Area Command, where he served until January 2000. He then was assigned to the Vice Narcotics Bureau.

On Aug. 19, 2000, Gillespie was promoted to Commander of the Central District, which includes Southeast Area Command, Downtown Area Command, the Traffic Safety Bureau (Traffic Bureau and McCarran Airport). He was promoted to Deputy Chief in June 2002 to oversee the operations of the Detention Services Division, which includes the Clark County Detention Center.

Upon the election of Sheriff Bill Young in 2004, Doug Gillespie was selected to serve as the undersheriff. He was elected sheriff in 2007.
