LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — A Cal-Berkeley law student convicted of beheading an exotic bird at the Flamingo Hotel last year will serve more than three months in prison.

Justin Teixeira, 24, will spend 190 days at High Desert State Prison, where he will participate in a boot camp. After completion of the program, he will be evaluated on his mental state. If he passes that, he will be placed on probation for three to five years. If he fails at the camp, he could go to prison for up to four year.

If he gets through his probation, his charge can be reduced from a felony to a gross misdemeanor.

Teixeira pleaded guilty to killing another person's animal, torture and injuring an animal.

In October 2012, Teixeira and another Berkeley law student, Eric Cuellar, hunted down an exotic bird at the Flamingo.

Cuellar pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of instigating animal cruelty.

In May, a third person, Hazhir Kargaran, pleaded no contest to three misdemeanors for his role in the beheading.

Cellphone video obtained by News 3 shows Teixeira chasing the bird around the property. On the video his friends can be heard laughing and egging him on.
