Being responsible fiscal stewards and in the best interest of Nevada citizens, Nevada Medicaid undergoes a multitude of quality assurance surveillance reviews and audits to ensure that Medicaid payments are done accurately. A recent audit revealed that some Obstetricians had incorrectly billed for services. The incorrect billing only relates to illegal non-U.S. citizens who are only eligible for Medicaid payment for emergency services.

Illegal non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for Medicaid. However, Medicaid has a provision that allows OB physicians to bill for medically necessary emergency deliveries. In these instances OB’s can bill and be reimbursed for the delivery only, not for prenatal nor postpartum. The audit revealed that some OBs submitted claims using a “global code” which includes prenatal care, delivery and post-partum care. Only Medicaid beneficiaries are covered for these services. Illegal non-U.S. citizens are not.

Medicaid is now recouping the overpayment that was made. Physicians are encouraged to resubmit their bill using the correct code to receive payment for deliveries. An “Urgent” notification was posted on the Medicaid Provider website several weeks ago about the audit discovery and the recoupment process. In addition to that communication, letters and phone calls are going out to all physicians involved in the overpayment. Again, OBs that re-submit claims for delivery only will receive payment.

If the recoupment activity creates a hardship for any physician, they are encouraged to call (775) 335-8500, to establish a payment plan. If a provider or medical office staff have questions about coding, they can call (775) 684-3748.

Our sincere hope is that through the Medicaid website, instruction letters and phone calls, and this news story, our doctors will understand the process to receive the correct payment.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Families of the victims of last month's shooting attack at a Connecticut elementary school have been invited to the White House today to see President Barack Obama outline an effort aimed at reducing gun violence.

Obama's ideas include bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines -- but he would need congressional approval for that. He's also taking steps on his own, including efforts to boost availability of mental health services.

He may also order the Justice Department to crack down on people who lie on gun-sale background checks.

In advance of today's event, the National Rifle Association has released an online video calling Obama an "elitist hypocrite" for having armed secret Service agents protect his daughters at school while not committing to installing armed guards in all schools.

There's a new Associated Press-GfK poll that indicates nearly six in 10 Americans want stricter gun laws in the aftermath of the shootings in Connecticut. Majorities of those surveyed favor a nationwide bank on military-style, rapid-fire weapons, and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama will hold the last news conference of his first term at the White House Monday morning.

Officials say Obama will take questions in the White House East Room at 8:15 a.m. PST. The event comes one week before the president's ceremonial swearing-in and inaugural address for a second term.

Among the issues the president is expected to address Monday are looming fiscal fights with Congress, particularly over raising the nation's debt limit, and his administration's efforts to curb gun violence.

The president is expected to receive a report on Tuesday from Vice President Joe Biden, who has been leading a task force on ways to reduce violence.
