UMC Hospital facing Feb. 11 Medicare deadline

University Medical Center officials say they are correcting deficiencies that led the federal government to threaten to halt Medicare payments to the region's only public hospital.

Hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said Thursday the hospital in Las Vegas expects to be able to pass a review of corrective measures required by Medicare by a Feb. 11 deadline.

Plummer says state officials have already signed off on corrective actions the hospital has taken since it was accused of failing to care for an uninsured pregnant woman in its emergency room.

At issue is how the hospital treated 25-year-old Roshunda Abney.

She and her fiance say she waited in the ER more than five hours Nov. 30 before she went home and gave birth to a baby who died.
