Titus working to save education at federal level

The Clark County School District could be asked to make some deep cuts to education.

Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus says she’s doing everything possible at the federal level to fill in that gap.

While at a Henderson elementary school Monday, Titus claimed that the “Jobs for Main Street” bill that passed the House last year could pour as much as $170 million into our state specifically for education and could save teachers’ jobs.

The bill is currently in the Senate.

“(The money) won't be here in time for the special session but I think it will come in time for this spring,” the congresswoman confirms. “We've got to get the Senate moving and of course they've got a lot on their plate. But jobs have certainly been identified as the priority from the president in the State of the Union Address, from Senator Reid, from our House. So I think you'll see a jobs bill move pretty rapidly.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Walt Rulffes says the money would make a big difference here in Clark County.

The district has already cut $250 million from its budget and may be asked to chop another $150 million during Governor Gibbons’ State of the State Address Monday night.
