Unwanted record: Nevada's jobless rate hits 14.2 percent

Page Last Updated: Monday July 19, 2010 7:22am PDT
Collette Wieland reporting

The unemployment rate in Nevada again soars to a new record high of 14.2 percent.

A slight increase from May, this means more Nevadans are out of work than every before. Currently, more then 193,000 people in our state don’t have a job.

For the Las Vegas area, unemployment is slightly higher at 14.5 percent. Reno and Carson City, however, are doing a bit better with a rate of 13.6 percent and 13.4 percent, respectively.

Benefits for 2.5 million Americans already ran out at the end of May, and thousands more are worried that their unemployment benefits are going to end as well.

Monday, President Obama says he will call on Republican lawmakers to stop blocking an extension.

Several Republicans, including Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, say they will only support an extension if the bill does not add to the national debt.

"We've been on a gargantuan spending spree for the last year and a half, far more than any deficits that were run up in the early part of the decade. This is a serious matter."

Although things are looking worse here in Nevada, the national unemployment rate is showing signs of improvement: The number of out-of-work Americans went down last month to 9.5 percent.

Economists say this is a good sign because there needs to be a national rebound before we see any improvements to our state.

We will find out how Nevada's jobless rate compares to the rest of the nation Tuesday.

If you think that number is high, go ahead and re-elect the moron Reid and watch it go even higher..This is the same guy who voted against English as the official Language. He also says he wanted to extend unemployment benefits but what he doesn't tell you is the pork he has in the bill and wonders why he can't get the support. Anyone who has bribed as many senators as he had would have been locked up by now.. Good luck folks, time for change.
Remember to take out the trash on November 2...

Vote for Sharon Angle, and the state of Nevada will become a deserted ghost town. You won't be able to PAY tourist to come to this State.

The woman is a Basket case, and her supporters are totally delusional and void of common sense. If Nevada has any hope of getting out of the HOLE that the state is in "SMART MONEY" would be on Senator Harry Reid.

But, Nevada is a Gaming state, this time the Voters in Nevada will be Betting against their FUTURE, if they vote Sharon Angle. Betting on Angle is like betting on a "3 legged mule in the Kentucky Derby".

Republicans have always been know for voting against their best interest, or marching in lock step over the side of a Cliff.

I'm so sick of ALL politicians I just changed my affiliation to INDEPENDANT. This unemployment extension better pass and pass quickly. It is NOT the fault of the worker that there are no jobs. You can blame those in authoritiy for killing the job market...yep, and that includes that muslim OBAMA. Shame on all of them. I'd like to bend them all over my knee!

What does Angle got to do with the tourist trade. Obama and Harry are in the process right now of killing what you are trying to blame Angle for. When Angle defeats Harry, she will still be subject to the down fall caused by Obama and Harry. This will be evident for possibly 2+ years. Not her doing. Who's been saying, not once but numurous times, not to spend money in Vegas. I would have to say Obama. Harry did nothing but spout his fairy fantasy numbers of fantasy jobs he has made up for Nevada. Harry as a future for Nevada? take your my daddy was a Demo, I was born a Demo, we'll kill the country with the blind eye of a Demo Party Member, and move back east. Why you cute little card carrying Demo, you.

Sharron Angle blames Harry Reid for the unemployment! What is Sharron Angle doing to create jobs in Nevada? She isn't a Senator so she should be working to create jobs. Afterall, if she's elected she has already stated that she won't help create jobs. Won't make a few phone calls to try to save any jobs either. As much as I don't really care for Harry Reid, we will be better off with him in Washington. Sharron Angle won't even get the time of day from fellow Republicans if she's elected. She's toxic and has a mental disorder.
