Vegas jail checking fingerprints for legal status

Page Last Updated: Thursday July 29, 2010 7:09am PDT
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The busy Clark County jail in Las Vegas has joined a federal program to check inmates' fingerprints to identify illegal immigrants for deportation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lori Haley said Wednesday the agency's "Secure Communities" program lets authorities run fingerprints through FBI criminal history and ICE immigration databases.

The Washoe County jail in Reno began using the program two weeks ago.

Haley says the idea is to identify violent and dangerous criminals previously convicted of serious crimes, violent offenses or drug trafficking.

Civil rights leaders say the program is unconstitutional because it is based on suspicion and arrest, rather than a criminal conviction.

In Las Vegas, the federal Immigration and Nationality Act 287(g) program also lets trained jailers question inmates and begin deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants.

I hope it helps in finding those who exploit americans. Also i would suggest vegas looks at joe in maricopa county as a example to follow....TENT city in vegas to period.Wasted money needs to end, and it really is not rocket science to figure out the problems.Einstein is not needed to figure out AMERICAN CHILDREN and schools should be first. All the wasted money from jailing people and from illegal aliens should go str8 to the school system.

First of all it is not unconstitutional BECAUSE people who are here ILLEGALLY are not Citizens so our Constitution does not apply to them. Additionally...what part of Ilegal Immigrant does the ACLU not understand. They ARE breaking laws by being here ILLEGALLY!! Geez.....do they not get it???

Fingerprinting illegals, now that's a great waste of time and money. Quite a few will not have records, yet! The ones that do aren't going to be caught anyway. Criminals from Mexico aren't going to have records and they won't have had fingerprints taken. What kind of morons are you? If they're Mexican and don't have papers on them, send them the hell out of here and back to Mexico.

Great idea and hope many are identified before some California judge claims it is unfair.

Now, how do you get the illegals off the strip, the ones passing out porn cards to the tourists? You know, the little porn business cards you see on the streets by the thousands. How much does it cost the City for clean up, while illegals make a living passing them out?

How does the city check legal status of the thousands working in Hotel housekeeping, you know, the ones that cant speak english cleaning the Hotel rooms for tourists? How many jobs has this taken away from citizens?

It is not just Mexicans, now there are thousands of Arabs all over. Stop supporting the places that hire these people. Like 7-11 or Car Wash's.

No papers? How do they get jobs? Stolen ID or work for cash. Better start enforcing our laws.

The process described here is not some new law, it is a Federal law that dates back several years.

For what infractions of local and State laws can local law enforcement officers take a violator to jail? There are many, and they apply to everyone.
Once he is in the slammer, a person's previous record is checked for priors and to verify identification. Oooops! No ID? No driver license? No vehicle registration? No vehicle insurance? Got outstanding tickets or warrants? Any other little secrets you are hiding? Bye-Bye.

I think most americans don't know how the immigration service works, so here is a little explanation why they are checking fingerprints on this immates.
When you come to this country LEGALLY you must have a visa, and at the point of entry they check your passport, visa, take fingerprints, and may take a picture of you (biometrics) so they know who you are. When you become a legal resident, they give a legal resident card, that you must carry at all times, and again they take biometrics, fingerprints and pictures. All the date is kept for future reference, and this is what police is checking, what is your status in the US if you cannot provide your papers. If a person doesn't show up on the immigration database and you are a foreigner, you are in this country ILEGALLY, got it?

I read a lot of frustrated people. Don't blame our politicians, WE put them in power, it's OUR fault. You want the law to be enforced, then become active, stop being passive. During the american revolution the majority of the citizens (approx 70%) were involved in politics. Today only 35% of registered voters vote, and since you only need 52% of the votes to win, if you get 18.2% of the population on you side, you win, is that the majority, no, so GET INVOLVED, PICK A PARTY OR NOT, ATTEND CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS, SCHOOL BOARD MEETIND, AND BECOME VERY WELL INFORMED!! If you don't know where to start look up NEVADA PATRIOTS,if you don't like that group, pick or create another, it's your duty to become political active.

I suggest a phone number be set-up to report neighbors known to be undocumented or expand the out-of-state license plate hot line. Save the police a trip (and tax payers money) by rounding-up license plate registration violators and illegals at the same time. Both efforts will provide needed relief for the schools; a cash infusion and lower class sizes.

The proper term is: ILLEGAL ALIEN - There is no such thing as a illegal immigrant. You come to this country and go through the Immigration and Naturalization process and become a citizen of the United States. ILLEGAL ALIENS sneak into the country and stay or come in on a work visa and never leave.

All that I have to say about the matter is: DEPORT ALL 11 MILLION OF THEM. Get them worthless slugs out of Our Country. And maybe somehow tag them so when they try again to come back illegally, maybe they should get electrocuted once they cross the border. Fry suckers.
