Local Hispanic community rallies against immigration law

Page Last Updated: Thursday July 29, 2010 6:00pm PDT
Anita Roman reporting

Valley Hispanics are feeling some relief after a federal judge in Phoenix issued a temporary injunction blocking implementation of the toughest portions of Arizona's controversial immigration law.

The local Hispanic community here in the valley is not taking Arizona’s ruling for granted and is stepping up its efforts to put a stop to SB 1070 altogether.

Several groups and organizations throughout Las Vegas came together at the Amistand Cristiana Church on Stewart and 9th Avenue Thursday to show lawmakers just how serious they are about immigrant rights and comprehensive immigration reform.

The groups unveiled a new campaign they are calling “Ask Me For My Papers.”

Members of Hispanics in Politics, Progress Now Nevada, and Democracia Ahora are vowing to fight until SB 1070 is abolished and a comprehensive immigration law is enacted in its place.

These groups say they are united with their brothers and sisters in Arizona, taking on their fight because they don't want to see a similar here in Nevada.

“There's talk of something coming here to Nevada, Nebraska,” says Alicia Estrada, Nevada State Director Democracia Ahora. “There are laws that are anti-immigrant and Texas and other states just aren't being supportive. Everyone is trying to address our broken system at local levels.”

State officials in Arizona went to an appeals court late Thursday afternoon in an effort to delay a judge’s ruling that blocked the most controversial parts of the immigration law.

They are seeking to allow the law to take full effect while the issue moves through the courts.

No matter which way you cut it, Nevada, and particularly Las Vegas, are getting the fallout from the population in Arizona that finds it too hard to live under Sheriff Joe's illegal immigration sweeps. Wake up lawmakers in Nevada. If they would rather come here because it's easier, then you aren't doing your job. We will have 10,000 of them here before too long. Just what we need. As if we don't have enough unemployment, and financial troubles associated with illegal immigrants already. We need stricter illegal immigration laws here in Nevada, and we need to elect politicians that are going to give them to the citzenry of this fine State. We don't need more illegals here. The National Guard Armory should be on Nevada's border's right now to shut the flow off, N-O-W!

The Las Vegas "Hispanic community" needs to understand one thing, nobody in America is above the law, especially someone who is here illegally. Apply for a visa and get in line like all other people from all over the world. If you don't want to follow the law then go back to Mexico. Our crime rate will drop and the unemployment rate will go down.

SB 1070 was only the beginning. Our foot is in the door. We will be able to open it eventually to let the illegals back out. We are a nation of laws. If you are here illegally then sooner or later WE will find out about you. You will have a life of looking over your shoulder. One day it WILL happen. You will do something illegal like not using your turn signal while driving and the Policia will pull you over. ICE will be called and you will not see your family. Your job will be gone. Go ahead and leave now and get back in line behind those who are going through the process legally.

Harry, you win anything other than a whisle in your wheates, and we will be calling for a vote by vote recount and approving of every vote is from a legal American. If any American votes for you, they have committed treason against the United States. NOW, get off your millions and start pushing for the enforcement of the Federal Law you and the rest have just claimed you already are enforcing. Prof is in the salsa heading back across the boarder for good.

I grew up on the east side of town and remember when it was predominantly white people(more like cowboys because it is zoned for horses)and the only mexican population was centered aroun 28th street, now they took over the whole east side and they look at me crazy when I visit my mother who has had a house there since 1961.I had to move to the NW so my children werent the only white kids at the schools over there.Like the fellow commentor MIKE B said the federal police should block Hoover Dam and all roads around Laughlin and Kingman. Its already hard enough for me to find employment to take care of my children, even though my family has been here since they built Hoover Dam and we never left yet.

Reading all these comments I think people dont understand a few things. These undocument groups of people are getting taxed on there checks they cant file at the end of the year.So they pay for school, politics, and education ect.The other is ilegal immigration just means that the goverment is going to be flooded with people with money becoming citizens so you are still going to have over popualeted problem whenb they become a US citizen. What people dont understand is when all these people leave, where are we going to do business. And reguardless profiling is ilegal plain and simpleHope its all worth it bringing war to our homes.I think the positive thing is to educate people on both sides and my last comment is the US makes to much money off these people, imagine if these people are 30% population of this country and they help pay for all services such as goverment.Imagine that 30% funding gone and now we have to do without or we(US citizen)will ahve to pay more, all you figure out the math.

Illegal immigrants cashing in on federal tax credits, study shows.
By: Kevin Mooney
Examiner Staff Writer/Commentary
April 16, 2009 Large numbers of illegal immigrants file tax returns using phony Social Security numbers to cash in on the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, thanks to lax government management, according to the author of a new study.

“Technically, only people authorized to work in the U.S. are eligible for the credit, you need a valid Social security number,” said Ed Rubenstein, a financial analyst and economist, speaking at a news conference Tuesday at the National Press Club.

“But identity theft, stolen Social Security numbers, and other scams effectively nullify the restriction. As a result, illegal aliens actually receive the EITC at even greater rates than legal immigrants,” Rubenstein said.

The IRS makes little or no effort to verify the authenticity of Social Security numbers, or existence of dependant children, Rubenstein said.

This makes it possible for illegal immigrants to claim children still living in Mexico as dependents and for parents living illegally in the U.S. to file separate returns claiming the same children as dependents under the EITC, Rubenstein said.

The EITC was created to boost work incentives for poor families with children. Childless households received a maximum $438 payment in 2008, while the maximum available to families with two or more children was $4,824.

“From a distance, the EITC looks like a winner,” he said. “The devil is in the details. For starters, the program is dominated by fraud.”
Illegal immigrant households are more than three times as likely to receive EITC than native-born American households,

Rubenstein said. Higher fertility rates evident among the immigrant population accounts for this disparity, he said.

“Even a tiny increase in the fertility rates, if maintained over the decades, will have enormous consequences,” Rubenstein said. “The role of EITC in the nation’s demographic destiny cannot be denied.”

Rubenstein also cited figures from the General Accounting Office (GAO) showing that as many as a third of all EITC claims are “improperly paid.”

Clearly illegal aliens DO NOT add to our tax system more than they take out. Not even the Democrats try to push this baseless argument if it was factual, they would have been shoving it down our throats for years!

@Tony T.

As I stated before, I am not afraid of an illegal alien taking my job.

tony...if you are legal, I don't think you need to worry. if you are illegal, then you need to go home and get in line to become an American citizen. You ststed in your last post that your parents were from Mexico so I will assume you are too.

I think what angers MOST Americans most about illegal Mexicans is that many of you come to this country but still think it is IK not to learn English. Illegals do not pay more than they use, crime at all levels and waving the Mexican flag. answwer me one question, just one. What would happen if I went to Mexico and demonstrated in the street against Mexico and I was carrying an American flag?

The point of a job in the United States is for legal and proper paper holding Visa workers to have them. NOT illegals who have over taxed our hospitals, schools and are, repeat, ARE receiving SS checks, welfare, government substities of all kinds us working AMERICANS can not get. There is NO! repeat NO! legal or justifyable reason for illegals to beable to pick up one single check on our land. Speaking to the mexican illegals, your, YOUR government SOLD California et al to us, we did not cheat your governemnt, they were the gready ones and sold it. The people whos tax dollars went to pay for the land say get over it and leave. Please.
