Controversy surrounds Brian Sandoval's alleged comments on immigration

Hetty Chang reporting

He wants to become Nevada’s first Hispanic governor but recent alleged comments about his family’s ethnicity have him backpedaling.

This concerns an interview Sandoval did with local Spanish language station Univision.

During the interview, Sandoval seemed to imply Arizona’s immigration law wouldn’t apply to his family. At least that’s how the comments reportedly came off.

Sandoval allegedly hinted he wasn’t worried about racial profiling happening to his children. News 3’s Jon Ralston asked him about it on “Face to Face” Wednesday.

Ralston: You're quoted as being unconcerned with your children being asked for papers in Arizona because you said, ‘My children are not seen as Spanish.’ That's what it says.

Sandoval: Ah...ah…

Ralston: That's not what you said?

Sandoval: No.

Ralston: That's the translation. We checked with the author of the article, too

Sandoval: I’ve never heard that quote before and I’ve never described my children as looking Hispanic or not Hispanic. So I don't agree with that translation whatsoever.

Sandoval’s alleged comments appear in an opinion piece in a local newspaper “El Tiempo.” Univision anchor and News Director Adriana Arevalo wrote about the interview, saying Sandoval was asked about how he would feel if his children were stopped in the street and asked for their papers.

Sandoval’s alleged response? “My children don’t look Hispanic.”

Sandoval: No one has ever asked me about them.

Ralston: So that article is incorrect?

Sandoval: Well, I disagree with it. I don't recall being asked about my kids.

Sandoval twice denied making those comments. News 3 received an official statement from him today:

"I don't remember saying it and it is most certainly not how I feel.  If I did say those words, it was wrong and I sincerely regret it. I am proud of my heritage and my family."

Univision will not release the tape of Sandoval’s comments because it’s a work product. While our sources confirm that the tape does exist, until it surfaces, it’s one columnists word against Sandoval’s.

Democrats are having a field day with this story. The state Democratic party put out a news release Thursday basically calling Sandoval a liar. The Democratic Governor’s Association also issued a statement Thursday calling on Sandoval to call for Univision to release the tapes.

He doesn't look hispanic to me.

He looks republican!

We had a republican move in our neighborhood back in 2000/2001. It was like a cancer... pretty soon there were republicans running around everywhere.

It wasn't long before all the jobs dried up, and our home values plummetted 60%.

I say we set up a new law. If you see someone that looks like a republican, check his papers. If it's true, deport him back to Texas.

Oh brother. You're serious? How is this even a story? This is what the liberal media is going to use to try to pick apart the guy, because you can't come up with anything else? This is not even a story people. This is ridiculous. Get a frikkin life already. It's bad enough we had to watch what you did to Sara Palin and John McCain, just so we could end up with a spawn of satan president that hates America and has the audacity to call us arrogant, after we help every country on the planet. And he picks as his atty gen some moron that stands up and calls us a nation of cowards and cares more about the rights of terrorists than the lives of Americans. And you're worried if Brian Sandoval may or may not have said that his kids don't look hispanic? Frikkin ridiculous. No wonder we're frikkin broke. You guys are dumber than stupid. Seriously WHO CARES??? Hey guess what? When I look at a picture of Brian Sandoval's family, his kids don't look hispanic to me. So? Who gives a rat's ...?

There is no tape of this comment. Just someone that made up a lie and it got out. Now they have to make bigger lies to prove the first lie is the truth! If you tell a lie enought times it becomes the truth. If you don't beleve me just ask Harry Reid.
